The Sand Creek Lakes Base Camp is located high in the mountains just northeast of the Sand Dune National Park. Guests ride deep into the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness and spend 6 days camping and fishing. Accommodations are elaborate bell tent camps and guests are accompanied by expert horseman as well as fishing guides. The Alpine lakes and streams offer excellent fishing for Cutthroat and brook trout. Several high mountain streams are also accessible from camp, adding variety to your fishing experience. In addition to fishing, the Sand Dune National Preserve is major wildlife country, giving guests a chance to view the same animals seen in Park without the crowds.
Cutthroat and brook trout ranging from 4 inches to 20 inches in size. These fish are wild as can be, and have some of the most extraordinary colors you won’t find just anywhere. Cutthroats are characterized by their distinct red coloration at the gills, and in the high country, their bodies are frequently tan in color. Brook trout are often smaller in size than cutthroat trout, but will fight just as hard. These fish will likely have a red/orange color on the lower part of their bodies and tails, as well as small pink spots along the upper section of their torso.
After a full day of fishing, guests return to the same location each evening. The advantages of this type of non-roving base camp include: hot meals waiting for you, dry and warm accommodations and a good night’s sleep after a full day of activity. The fact that we don’t have to break down camp each day and move allows our guests to spend more time vacationing during their Colorado fishing pack trip and less time packing and unpack their duffel.
Ride into the backcountry and embrace the ultimate calm and pristine beauty of the wilderness. Our guides, camp jacks, and camp cooks take care of the packing, set up, and chores associated with camp life and horse care. This leaves you to let all your cares melt away as you enjoy life’s simple pleasures and the blessings of mother nature. Travel by horseback is a deep-rooted piece of American heritage. For most, the wilderness is no longer accessible as they are born into and wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of city life. For some even, the idea of entering the wilderness is intimidating. We are passionate about providing a route into the wilderness in a way that showcases its rugged beauty and builds a new rapport with nature.
